A Chargebee alternative
that shows its work.
Chargebee is a mature subscription suite. Teams usually start looking elsewhere when the base fee plus a percentage of billing volume stops matching the value, or when finance cannot explain a number an invoice produced. yRecurring is the complete billing engine with flat pricing and a receipt behind every amount.
Side by side
Both platforms cover the core of subscription billing: plans, trials, coupons, proration, invoicing, dunning, and a customer portal. The differences that matter are how you pay for it, how usage and AI pricing are handled, and whether the numbers on an invoice can explain themselves.
| Chargebee | yRecurring | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry paid plan | Flow: $0/mo plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99/mo plus 0.65% | Launch: $39/mo flat, up to $10,000/mo billed |
| Cost as you grow | The percentage scales with everything you bill | Flat bands; overage capped at the next tier's price |
| Usage and token billing | Metered billing available | Eight combinable models; per million token prices, prepaid credit wallets, cost passthrough with markup |
| Why is this amount X? | Invoice totals and line items | Every amount explained: formula, inputs, and each step, one click from the invoice |
| Getting started | Flow starts at a $0 base fee, 0.80% of volume from the first dollar | 14 day trial, no credit card, full engine |
| Migration | CSV imports | AI assisted import from your Chargebee export, with a dry run before anything is written |

Where Chargebee is the better fit
- You need the surrounding suite, such as CPQ and revenue recognition, from one enterprise vendor.
- Your team is deeply invested in Chargebee's ecosystem and the economics still work at your volume.
- You want a vendor with a long enterprise track record in this category.
Where yRecurring differs
Flat pricing, not a toll on growth
A percentage of billing volume means your billing vendor earns more every time you do, without doing more. yRecurring charges a flat monthly price per volume band, and a growth month is capped at the next tier's price.
Every amount carries a receipt
Proration, tiers, taxes, and credits combine into numbers customers question. Every yRecurring amount links to its calculation: the formula, the inputs, each intermediate step. Disputes get shorter when both sides can read the same receipt.
AI billing is built in, not bolted on
Prices per million tokens, prepaid credit wallets with auto top up, and passing model costs through with a margin are first class citizens of the pricing engine, at sub cent precision.
An import that does the tedious part
The AI import assistant reads your Chargebee CSV export, proposes the mapping, cleans inconsistent values, and shows a full dry run. Most catalogs come across the same day you export them.
Questions teams ask
How to switch from Chargebee →Can I bring my Chargebee data with me?
Yes. Export your customers, subscriptions, and invoices from Chargebee as CSV and use the AI assisted import: it maps the columns, cleans up messy values, shows you a dry run of exactly what will be created, and only writes after you confirm. Historical records never trigger emails to your customers.
Does yRecurring charge a percentage of my revenue?
Plans are flat: $39, $99, or $299 per month, banded by how much you bill through the platform. If you grow past your band mid month, the overage is capped at the next tier's price, so the most a growth month can cost you is the plan you would upgrade to anyway. Your effective rate falls as you grow. Above the Scale band, pricing is custom.
Is yRecurring a merchant of record?
No. Your customers pay through your own payment gateway accounts (Stripe, PayPal, Braintree, GoCardless, and more), so the money and the gateway relationship stay yours. yRecurring is the billing engine: subscriptions, invoices, recovery, and reporting.
What does switching actually involve?
Sign up for the trial (no card needed), import your CSV export with the dry run, connect your payment gateway, and send a test invoice. Keep Chargebee running in parallel until you have verified a full billing cycle; nothing about the trial forces a cutover.
